FOUND IN HOUSE

TWO MONTHS' GAOL

Found in a house in Vivian Street;' John Michael George Johnson, a labourer, aged 22, appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today, and pleaded guilty to being on the premises without lawful excuse. He said he had entered the house because he was being followed by a detective.

Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle, prosecuting, said that the complainant was a married woman. At about 3.30 pjn. yesterday she was unwell, and \v\s lying down in an upstairs room, and she heard a stranger's footsteps oh the stairs. At approximately the same time, a boarder in the house returned and saw the accused coming down the stairs. Interviewed by Detectives Alty and Callaghan, the -accused said he knocked on the side door, and, receiv-ing-no reply, concluded,there was no one at home, so went upstairs to have a look around.

Johnson said to the Bench that he was walking down the street and noticed a detective following him. He went into the house to get away, because he had been hounded around co much.

"You can hardly expect me to believe that, said the Magistrate, who imposed a sentence of two months' imprisonment.
