STRIKE RIOTS

PITCHED BATTLE IN STREETS

OF MINNEAPOLIS

MINNEAPOLIS, July 15

A series of riots arising out of the Works Progress Administration strike culminated today in a pitched battle in the city streets. Police in armoured cars armed with riot guns and tear gas fought the strikers armed with bricks and sticks. One striker was killed and 17 were injured.

The Mayor later announced that the city refused responsibility for the further operation of the relief works, "in order to avert, a civil war.'"
