HAWKE'S BAY HUNT

EXCELLENT CARD

TOMORROW'S FORM HORSES

Racing in the Dominion tomorrow will be-confined to two hunt fixtures, and the more important of these is the Hawke's Bay Hunt' Club's Annual Meeting on the Hastings course. Really excellent fields have been secured, and though the results are likely to have little real bearing on the chief events at the Grand National Meeting next month, the form may be instructive for some of the minor events in the south, nominations for which do not close till next week.

The weather recently has been unsettled throughout the Dominion, and the going tomorrow is likely to favour horses who act best when the ground is soft.

The betting will be under the singlepool system.

TOPWEIGHTS FAVOURED

The feature event of the day is the Harold Russell Memorial Cnalienge Cup, which is the new title that has been given the former Hawke's Bay Hunt Cup Steeplechase. The best of the form is that of Rapa Waiata, who was' beaten by two good ones in Bridegroom and Slayer at his two outings at Trentham last week, and of Blue Tiger, who easily won the Dannevirke Hunt Cup a fortnight ago when having his first race for eighteen months and his first over country. There is no line to their relative form, but, as Blue Tiger was a good staying hurdler in the open class and Kapa Waiata is a proficient ,'cnaser who was weighted well upi at Trentham, Mr. Coyie has astutely, set them both on the same mark. Count; Willonyx fell at his only start at Trentham and he now comes in only 51b better against Rapa Waiata, which may not be enough to turn the scale his way. Master Turbine and Umpire were the minor place-getters at Dannevirke and they have a further pull in the weights over Blue Tiger, but the winner is the more likely to , have benefited with the race. Given, who lost his rider at Dannevirke, is probably best of that field outside of Blue Tiger.

I There is a; .surprisingly ■" large field ! for the solitary open event on the flat, I the Tikokino Handicap, 6£ furlongs, i and it possesses class with Black Thread at the head of the list. At the recent Great Northern Meeting | Black Thread beat everything except j the outsider, Gay Seton, when burdened with 10.5 off the same minimum as tomorrow's, and though he failed I at two subsequent starts he is a horste, like Majority, who can handle big imposts in heavy ground. Gold Ballad, who scored attractively among • the hacks in his only race at Trentham, Royal Minstrel, and Solaria look best of the others at the distance, but First Chapter, who won the race in a poorer field last year, is a possible upsetting element after two previous starts since his resumption. In the other events horses who promise to have followings are the elect of H. SV Greene's pair, Begorrah and Harbour Bar, also Curie's stablemate The Tramp and Whakao (Otane Hurdles), • Laughing Song, Tideway, Flying Flag, Harina, and the Black Credit bracket (Okawa Maiden), Raana, Le Toquet, The Ring, and Marsyas (Riverslea Hack), Inheritance and Tideway (Soutra Hunters'), and Hunting Royal, Gold Ballad, Halley, Hagen, and Gay Laura (WaiI tangVrHack). • 'form and prospects.
