MAORIS AND LIQUOR

TRIBE OPPOSES LICENCES

The granting of liquor licences' to the King. Gountry was: opposed at a meeting of the Maniapoto tribe at the Te Kuitj' Pa, and a resolution was carried unanimously that there should be a stiffening of the law in connection with the introduction of liquor into the King C pun try, states today's "New Zealand Herald." It -was suggested that the consigning of liquor into this area should be stopped altogether.

. The position was very fully debated into "the early hours of the. morning. The. speakers were mainly the older leaders of the tribe, who were very .:,concerned over the amount of pub- \ .licity which had been given to this ■question. They did riot desire the relaxing .of the present restrictions. "While deploring the amount of drinking among the Maori people, they considered that the position would not be relieved by the licensing of hotels. It was stated that arrests for drunkenness were not so numerous in the King Country as in licensed areas.
