ACROSS COUNTRY
AUSTRALIAN TEAM
The council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association decided last night to ask the Australian Amateur Athletic Union if It would be prepared to accept an invitation to send a team of cross-country runners to New Zealand next year on a similar basis to that on which a New Zealand team went to New South Wales in 1935, namely, that the steamer fares be paid by the Australians, the fares in 1935 having been paid by New Zealand. The Auckland Centre wrote suggesting that a team of six be invited, the Australians to compete in a 10,000 metres event at the Centennial Winter Games in Auckland in 1940. In also advocating a visit by an Australian team, the Otago Centre suggested that the team compete in the New Zealand cross-country championship, to be held next year in Dunedin, and in a ten miles track event against a New Zealand team at the Hutt Park racecourse.
The secretary, Mr. H. McCormick, said he had made an application for assistance in financing such a visit from the funds of the sports art union. Referring to the Auckland and Otago suggestions, he said he thought that Otago and Auckland had special claims for consideration.
Mr. A. L. Stevens said that the team could compete at both centres.
