NOVICES IN VITTORIA
Lustral was such a pronounced favourite for the Vittoria Hurdles that on the win machine, he had nearly three times as many friends as Araboa, who was best favoured o£ the others. However, after the race he had many fewer admirers. He tried to run off at the first fence, and after that he simply would not consent to do his best.
The winner was Jewelled Girdle, one of the novices in the field, and the only horse to make a race ot it with him was Toper, another novice. By coincidence, Doth these horses had had only one previous start over hurdles, ana each had then lost his rider at the first fence.
Jewelled Girdle raced to the front after the first fence, and Toper and Export went with him. Along the back Export dropped out, and toe other pair opened a break on the rest. Toper joined Jewelled Girdle for the final fence, and, if anything, landed just in front, but Jewelled Girdle had the
