RAIN HOLDS OFF

INCREASED INVESTMENTS

Yesterday gave the lie to Monday's weather forecast, for, after rain to the early hours of the morning, the skies cleared sufficiently for the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting to be opened under quite pleasant winter conditions. The day remained fine, and, though it was still a bit keen, it was otherwise most enjoyable for racing. Last evening heavy rain again set in in the Valley.

The surprise of all was the track. It was certainly heavy, but the turf did not cut up, as anticipated and the horses did not sink far. into it. The going reflected the highest credit on the care that has been given ■to the course during recent years.

The attendance exceeded expectations. The stewards would not have been astonished if there had been a drop in the investments, but instead j of that the turnover showed an increase of £5676 10s, the figures being £57,341 (£25,137 10s win, £32,203 10s1 place) for the day, compared with. £51,664 10s (£22,162 win, £29,502 10s place) last year, when the weather was more favourable.
