COOMBE AND MALFROY OUT
The principal attraction at Wimbledon yesterday was the meeting of the eight seeded women players in the fifth round (quarter-finals). The surprise result of the singles was the defeat of Miss H. Jacobs, who met Mrs. Wills Moody in the final last year, by Miss Kay Stammers, the British left-, hander. Miss Stammers was the only British player to enter the semi-finals, the other players being Mrs. Sperling (Denmark) and Miss Marble and Mrs. Fabyan (U.S.A.) With the exception that Miss - Hard wick replaced Mrs. Wills Moody, who is not competing this year, the eight players in the fifth round were the same as last year. In the third round of the men's doubles the New Zealanders Coombe and Malfroy were beaten by Mitic and Puncec, of Yugoslavia. The French veterans Borotra and Brugnon went into the fourth round. Stammers (Britain) beat Miss H. Jacobs (U.S.A.), 6-2, 6-2. Mrs. H. Sperling (Denmark) beat Miss R. M. Hardwick (Britain), 6-4, 6-0. Miss A. Marble (U.S.A.), beat Miss J. Jedrzejowska (Poland), 6-1, 6-4. Mrs. S. Fabyan (U.S.A.) beat Mrs. R. Mathieu (France), 6-4, 6-2. MEN'S DOUBLES. (Holders: J. D. Budge and C. G. Mako, U.S.A.) Third Round. J. Borotra and J. Brugnon (France) beat I. G. Collins and R. X Tinkler (Britain). 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. D. Mitic and <\ Puncec (Yugoslavia) beat D. C. Coombe and C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand), 7-9, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, 6-4.
