MR. NUGENT WELCH'S ART

An engaging clarity and frankness characterises every one of the thirtythree wafer-colours by Mr. Nugent Welch which are now on view fit McGregor Wright's, Lambton Quay. No matter whether the subject is a rockgirt piece of coastal scenery or a lone puriri tree on a sun-baked hillside, there ia the same sure touch and luminous colouring which, make Mr. Welch's painting so distinctive. In one of two instances Nature in a threatening mood has been painted, with rain clouds dominating the sky, but most of the pictures are bathed in sunlight and strike^ a cheerful note. Scenes near Fordell, on the Coromandel Peninsula, and around Wellington, have provided Mr. Welch 'with picturesque subjects, and the whole collection shows some of the best work that the artist has ever exhibited.
