INVITATION CONCERT
LOWER HUTT CIVIC BAND
Under the; auspices of the Lower Hutt Civic Band an invitation concert provided a musical feast in the Horticultural Hall last evening. The band, which is under the patronage of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, has made much progress during the year, and has recently been brought under the conductorship of Mr. J. Richards, who, while probably the youngest bandmaster in New Zealand, has played in some of the leading bands in England and has conducted a band in Canada. The band is also probably the most youthful in. the Dominion. The. items played by the band were "Deep Harmony," "Three Blind Mice," "Sunday Evening Service," "Caractacus," and "Community Land.".These were all well interpreted. < "Sunday Evening Service" and "Caractacus" were especially impressive. Mrs. W. Bradley, soprano,\ was heard by the Hutt public for probably the last time before she makes her borne in Hamilton. She sang four items, including "The Swallow," "Have You News of My Boy Jack," and "Oh, No, John." Mrs. Whiteman played the accompaniments. Miss May Hyam, played the violin solo "The Girl With the Flaxen Hair," "Midnight Bells," "Legende," and "Dance Espagnole," and was warmly applauded. Mr. Frank Crowther was Miss Hyam's accompanist. Mr. aLes Stapp, tenor, sang "Where the Praties Grow," "Short'nin' Bread," "My Banjo,", and "Heart's Haven." Mr. Zaharl Zelenevich, a Russian singer, who had a long experience with the Don Cossacks Choir, 'wore national costume and sang in Russian "Russian Gipsy Song," "Time Will Change," "The Sleigh Song," "Volga Boat Song," and "The Cuckoo." He was accompanied by his wife. Mr. J. McGrath, a member of the band, played euphonium solos, including one of the Test pieces at the last band contest, "In Cellar Cool." ' y On behalf of the guests, Mr. Gladstone Hill thanked the' band and its president, Mr. J. W. Andrews, and the tho other performers for an excellent programme. Mr. "Andrews expressed his confidence in the future of the band, and stated that it was the intention to provide a set" of new instruments. He also thanked, the performers.
The performers and helpers were entertained at supper by Mrs. Andrews and other ladies.
