AUCKLAND DRIVERS
WELLINGTON MEETING
DISPUTES COMMITTEE ISSUE
The statement made yesterday by Mr. H. J. Knight, secretary of the New | Zealand Master Carriers' Federation and of the New, Zealand Road Transport Alliance-, regarding the Auckland matters in dispute under the New Zealand Drivers' Award, was replied to today by Mr. Andrew..Par lane, Wel-' lington, president of the New Zealand Drivers' Federation. "Mr. Knight denies that officials of the Auckland Union came to Wellington with the object of having the mat* ters in dispute referred to a disputes committee, as a result of prior agreement by the employers concerned," said Mr. Parlane. "I did not claim it was by prior agreement with the employers, concerned; I claim it was by a verbal arrangement between Mr. T, O, Bishop, Mr. Knight, ;and myself. The arrangement wag -: made per medium of the telephone,, hut 1 took a careful note in my diary of all thej conversation and a perusal of that Will show that both the gentlemen referred to were in favour of the matters in dispute being referred to a disputes committee, as provided for in the award.. A telegram was sent by me to the Auckland Drivers' Union to this effect, and it was responsible for the two representatives of. the Auckland Union coming to Wellington. "With regard to the.merits of the dispute, I have nothing to add to my. previous statement other than that the worker concerned rendered service to I the value of "over £1.1. lor which he [got no recognition. If Mr. Knight; thinks this is fair and equitable, he is entitled to his own opinion, but I think' that had the matter been referred to a disputes committee he .would have j found that a majority of that committee j .would'have held a:different opinion to] himself." . *. : --X . - - j
