HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The House- of Representatives met at 2;30 o'clock this afterhopn. On behalf of the Hon. W, E. Barnard (Government, Napier), Mr. R. McKeen gave notice fo a:sk the Acting Minister of Social Security (the Hon. 'W.-'E, Parry) whether it was proposed to .amend the-Social Security Act so as to enable persons on unemployment benefit- to draw family- allowance in addition. "Under the Act," said Mr. McKeen,; "a family with an income up to £5J per week, which includes ttiore than two children under 16 years of age, { is entitled to family allowance, When j the man, who is usually the sole breadwinner, falls out of work and draws in unemployment benefit much less than I in wages, he is at present deprived of family allowance when it is rnostl needed." 1 The Import* and Export Licensing Regulations gazetted last December were formally tabled 'in- accordance with the statutory requirements. Mr. A. N. Grigg (National, Mid-Can-terbury) gave notice to ask the Minister of Defence when the. orders for 16,000 pairs of boots and substantial quantities of khaki cloth for uniforms were placed by the. Defence Department, and if they were to provide requirements for the increased estab- j lishment decided_ upon at-the Pacific Defence Conference. Stressing the value of the work being done by Girl Guides, Mr. J- A. Roy (National, Clutha) gave notice to ask the Minister of Internal Affairs whether, in view of the financial assistance given to the Boy. Scout movement by the Government, the ~ Government would consider also granting assistance, to Girl Guides in connection with their Centennial celebrations.
