LEADER DEFENDED

The farmers' leader, Mr. W. W. Mulholland, president of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, was warmly defended at the meeting of the Makara-Hutt Valley provincial executive meeting yesterday, and a resolution on these lines was passed. - ■ :

Strong resentment was expressed at remarks made by the Prime Minister regarding Mr. Mulholland. Speaking at the opening of a footwear factory at Woolston early last month, the Prime Minister said he could not refrain fro. 1 referring "to the political leader of the non-political Farmers' Union."

The text of the resolution passed yesterday is as follows:— ,

"We strongly resent the remarks made by the Prime Minister regarding the Dominion president of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. As farmers, comprising small sheep and ; dairy farmers, we respectfully wish to inform the Prime Minister that we have the utmost confidence in our leader, and to state emphatically-that the Dominion president, not only represents us but voices our views when he speaks." ;

The resolution was moved by the provincial president, Mr. R. Sievers, and was carried unanimously and by acclamation.*
