(By "Binocular.")
Although matters did not promise over-well yesterday the weather took a definite turn for the better this morning, arid the Otaki Maori Racing Club's • Winter Meeting was held in bright sunshine and before a large attendance ' . pi patrons. The track was holding. / Results:— .. PUKEHOU HURDLES, £130; li miles. .- i^_i_x. Fisher and T. R. George's .«, . b g Lustral, by Tidal —Asterism, '.'. . ' syrs, 10.8 (R. W. Favourite for the Pukehou Hurdles, " ' Lustral moved up half a mile from home to beat Erebus in the straight. The latter, however, was a shade unlucky, in thai he was well back early, and when up with the leader was ' carried wide at the last fence. Chat, • alter being well' back practically - throughout, put in a late appearance to get within half a. length of Erebus, narrowly beating Sunbeam for the minor money.' Sunbeam ran a most encouraging race for a newcomer. All Blood, pacemaker for the greater portion of the journey, made a bad jump five furlongs from home and tired. Toper fell early and interfered with several others, and Ruadina dipped at -the *end of the first round. Misurina ..fenced badly and was never dangerous. Won by two lengths and a half, third horse three-quarters of a length away. Time, lmin 5 3-ssec.
After haying every chance Parian, _ivho ,was a firm favourite for the first division of the Waikanae Scurry, weakened into third berth. Th*e winner turned up in Saxon Tor, who gave the sire Leighon his first success on the Turf. Saxon Tor was always well placed and actually headed Parian before the straight entrance was reached.
Valiant Lady made a bid to get up in , the straight, but the leader1, who is a commanding type of galloper, had something in reserve. Defy ran a creditable race to be fourth, ahead of Richelieu Pearl and Hunting Squire. The last-named did not get away too - well but made a fast run crossing the , -top. Black Majesty appeared to be a likely improver.

(Winner trained by A. E. Neale, Bulls.) Won by a length; third horse two lengths away. Time, 2min 14 2-ssec. In the early stages of the Ta • Timi Kara Handicap Liane,, who shared the position of favourite with Meamea, was bowling along very nicely in front iii company with Silvanus, but she then dropped back suddenly, her saddle having slipped forward. At the time Might was racing past, and the gelding held command till approaching the ': straight, where Mataroa and Rustem
joined issue. In a good race home 'Mataroa finished a shade the better to ~ win nicely,, with Corroboree a couple , -of.lengths back. Tidewaiter, after -..- being well back early, improved his- • , position in the closing stages and was right up with the third horse at the v post. Might stopped badly, and Meamea was never a possibility. RANGIUEU HACK AND HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, £130; about 2J 1 ' miles. 2—l—H, A. McBrearty), 7-6 Raparahara 9.0. (P. Jarvis).
(Winner trained by Owner, Waverley.) - Won by six lengths, third horse four -lengths away. Time, 4min 39 4-ssec. The contest for the Rangiuru Hack > and Hunters' Steeplechase was free 'from mishap, and an interesting race over the last half-mile saw the wellbacked Lactose prove his superiority under the conditions. Royal King was a prominent figure for a period, but his condition then gave out, although he came again to finish just outside the- money. Thrasher, who was fencing well, was always first or second in the.running, but he could not hold his place, when the pressure was applied. Artful Dodger and Lady Callaghan were both well back over the initial mile and a half, and the former finished the better to gain $hird money.
