MILE SHORTAGE
NO LOCAL SCHOOL SUPPLY
. No milk had been supplied to school children in the Wellington district for a'week, and there was ho-prospect of any supply being arranged at present, said the. chairman of the Wellington City Council milk committee, Mr. L. W. McKenzie, last night. fe
At present there was sufficient milk for domestic requirements, in spite of a greatly increased demand, said. Mr. McKenzie. The increase might be caused by the failure of nearby iar> mers to supply milk or by an influx of people to Wellington.
A period of cold weather would cause the supply to drop, but if mild weather continued the supply would be all right. If the. supply dropped- steps would have to be taken to conserve the quantity of milk available. . The supply last year was at its lowest during the week ending July 16. There might be a shortage of milk for a. few days this year, but it was not , expected. The position would be . watched very carefully.
The council had tried every available source to get further supplies of milk, but had been unsuccessful. Supplies were drawn from as far away as Featherston," Greytown, Ohau, and Levin. An endeavour had been made to^et milk from Palmerston North, but there was as great a shortage there as in Wellington.
