SIR H. BATTERBEE IN

CARRIAGE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) j DUNEDIN. June 15. A startling incident occurred on the south-bound Christchurch-Invercargill express near Otaio about noon today when a bullet shattered the Avindow of a first-class carriage, in Avhich. it is believed, the High Commissioner for Great Britain in New Zealand, Sir Harry Batterbee, Avas traA^elling. Splinters of glass fell on to the lap of a passenger sitting by the broken window, but luckily he received no injuries, and. before he could be interviewed by the Dunedin police, he had* left the station. The guard of the train, however, returned to Christchurch on the north express with a full report. Though a search was made for the bullet during the express's short wait in Dunedin, no trace of it could be discovered, and a more thorough examination of the car was to be made on the train's arrival at Invercargill. It is considered that the bullet was fired from a .22 rifle.
