USE OF BICYCLES

REGISTRATION EXPECTED

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 15.' The intention of the Government to introduce legislation providing for the registration of bicycles is indicated by information received by the traffic authorities in Christchurch. They are confident that this will be one of the provisions in legislation to be introduced by the Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple) during the coming session of Parliament. They have been advised that registration of bicycles will be one of several amending clauses to the existing traffic regulations. The decision of the Government to make the registration of bicycles compulsory interests Christchurch probably more than any other centre in New Zealand. It is officially estimated that in Christchurch there are between 40,000 and 50,000 bicycles. Other estimates go even higher than that figure, but, in any case, the per capita bicycle population of Christchurch reaches something approaching a world record. Unofficial estimates have placed the number of cyclists in the city at nearer 60,000. It is stated that legislation will provide for a nominal registration fee of about one shilling. j
