EXHIBITION BUILDINGS

Reporting to today's meeting of the Wellington Fire Board on events during tlie year ended March 31 last, the brigade superintendent, Mr. C. A. Woolley. said that the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition buildings at Rongotai had received a good deal of attention in regard to the fire protection services. This had involved numerous visits of inspection by brigade officers. The fire station founded for th protection of the buildings was occupied with a machine and three permanent men on March 10 of this year. The inspection department of the brigade had also made inspection during the year embodying buildings, theatres, and gorse-covered sections, etc. The Wellington Harbour Board's fire-fighting plant and equipment received the usual yearly inspection. During the year 1434 extinguishers and 59 lengths of hose from private buildings were serviced by the brigade, compared with 1289 and 90 respectively for the previous year. The total number of fires successfully dealt with in premises where such equipment was under service and without call upon the brigade was 38, or a decrease of 11 on the previous year. The board approved today of the staff at the fire station at the Exhibition being increased by another man. In addition to the firemen a number of nighwatchmen are efriployed by the contractors for the Exhibition buildings.
