OTAKI CANDIDATES
SEVERAL HORSES RESUME
(By "Rangatira.")
The only Trentham horse among the acceptors for the Hawke's Bay Meeting on Saturday is Primak, who remained at Hastings after his race there last week. Primak was then disappointing, but his poor showing is attributed to his having got his tongue over the bit, and he might make amends this week. He will be ridden as usual by P. Burgess, who will also be on Journet in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles.
Trentham stables wix. be well represented at Otaki on Saturday week, and there was some interesting work on the tracks this morning, tne first for some time. ' The, weather was fine and the tracks had made a good recovery from the recent storms. The inside
■l the grass track was soft, but not as bad as one might have expected.
Yours Truly (L. T. Nesbitt) and Kena (T. Biggs) were together at the end of six furlongs in lmin 20sec, the last half-mile in 52sec. Yours Truly vyill resume at Otaki. Kena, who will have his first racing from his new quarters at the Wellington Meeting, has thrived since his transfer to Trentham, especially during the last week or so.
Gothic (S. G. Robinson) was a neck in front of Titter (S. Wilson) after six furlongs in lmin 21sec, the last halfmile iij 53_sec Phil (R. L. Hitchens), Happy Heels (Robinson), and Etzel (H. Challinder) finished in that order after seven furlongs in lmin 37sec, the last half-mile ih 58sec.
Liane (Wilson) appreciated the softer going by beating Dungarvan (Challinder) by three lengths ove" seven furlongs in lmin 34sec, t_ie last half-mile in 56sec. Might (Challinder) ran a mile alone in lmin 51sec and did it comfortably. ' .
Floral Robe (R. J. Belcher) came from behind to beat Gaylord (Wilson) and Lady Baron (Foster) over half a mile in 57£ sec. Mother-in-Law (J. McCauley) finished similarly in heading off Beauly (R. Bucknell) and Wakarara (Wilson) over five furlongs in lmin 7sec,'the last hall-mile in 53_sec. Lady Baron is. under offer of sale, but the option has not yet been exercised.
The other work on the flat was mainly of a strong pacing nature. Among horses back after' spells are Beau Vite, Pearl of Asia, Peerless, Boomerang, Beaulivre, Globe Trotter, Cornaro, Siglow,' "Acrobat, a Bulandshar—Penelophon filly, and a Nightmareh —Jubilant gelding, the last pair being rising thre^-year-olds who were not prepared for racing this season. Sigurd is to resume next week, but, like the other members of the late Mr. W. Higgins's team, will not be set en serious work prior to the dispersal sale next month.
There were a couple of bouts over the schooling hurdles this morning. Toper (R. A. Hawkings) outjumped Good Sun (Nesbitt) over four fences, the latter not handling the conditions too happily. Far East (P. J. McBrearty) jumped very well for a novice in taking four fences stride for stride with the more experienced Lustral. Toper and Far East both promise to make good hurdlers.
S. Wilson's mounts at Hastings on Saturday will be Le Toquet, First Chapter, and Proclamation.
