JOHNSTON'S HILL
FUNDS FOR PURCHASE
ANOTHER £250 WANTED
According to reports made to the Wellington Beautifying Society last night, two-thirds of the £750 to be found by public subscription towards the purchase of Johnston's Hill, at Karori, as a scenic and recreation reserve, has been promised. A canvass is to be carried out to raise the remaining £250. An appeal made by circular is still bringing a fairly steady response.
Captain S. Holm, who presided, said a previous meeting had decided to write to the Bruce Trustees for financial assistance for the -urchase of Johnston's Hill. A reply had been received stating that owing to commitments the trustees could not assist but, in the event of any of the grants not being taken up, further consideration would be given to the matter.
Mr. H. S. B. Fletcher said that he had been in constant touch with Mr. B. Sutherland and they had inspected the hill and some of the surrounding country. He reported in committee on action that had been taken. About £500 had been premised towards the purchase of the hill, he said.
From £5 to £6 was coming in daily, Captain. Holm said, but that would decline later. . Arrangements had been made to make personal calls or city firms.
Mr. Fletcher said house-to-house canvassing had been arranged in Karori.
It was agreed that canvassing should be continued.
