REMARKS RESENTED
ARMY RECRUITING
MR. SCRIMGEOUR TAKEN TO TASK
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, This Day,
Exception to the broadcast remarks of the Controller of Commercial Broadcasting was taken by several members at an executive meeting of the Territorial Association.
It was claimed that the Controller had alleged that war was being fomented by America and certain other countries to stimulate recruiting. Such remarks, it was objected were prejudicial to local recruiting and, further, were unbecoming public remarks from a civil servant.
It was decided to communicate with the Minister of Defence and ask that steps be taken to prevent a repetition of such incidents.
PRIME MINISTER'S COMMENT
"The policy of the Government has already been outlined by me as head of the Government," said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) today, when commenting on the above message.
"I am not bound by the remarks of any individual," he continued. "bMy statement regarding defence was founded on facts. I agree with those who say that if the people of the world had their way there would be no war, but the people of the world are not altogether having their own way, and we have to live in the shadow of war. That was one of the statements I made in my recent broadcast. If the people had the say in the matter there would be no war, now or at any other time.""
