WINTER RACE MEETING

Fine but mild, dull weather was experienced by the patrons of the Wanganui Jockey Club for its Winter Meeting on Saturday, but Monday developed into a very wet day. A. feature of the dressing was the variety ' of colour, and wide choice of hats. Among the many present were Mesdames Hugh Speed, wife of the president, in green with silver fox furs; H. D. St. Paul's Church was effectively adorned with pink and blue hydrangeas on Saturday afternoon for the wedding of Beth, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. Higginbottom, and Jack Nicholas, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Meuli. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a Victorian frock of blue water-waved taffeta, with Juliet cap and veil of blue, and carried a blue posy. The bridesmaid was Miss Isobel Gilmour, wearing pink water-waved taffeta and pink cap. Mr. T. Craig was best man, and the Rev. A. C. McLean officiated, with Mrs. Emmett at the organ. The wedding reception was held at Victoria Hall, where Mrs. Higginbottom received her guests wearing a smart black frock relieved with pearl and cream. Mrs. Meuli was also in black. Social Afternoon. Over 80 members of the Early Settlers' Association met at Victoria Hall for a social afternoon recently. Two big log fires and gay flowers made a bright welcome, and everyone was welcomed by the Mayoress, Mrs. W. J. Rogers, and by Mr. L. B. Chappie. Among the speakers were Messrs. H. C. Veitch, who spoke about the Centenary book (Wanganui), and B. White and F. H. Keesing, who spoke about, the early days. The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Rogers, spoke briefly on the coming Centenary, and mentioned that a roll of pioneers was being compiled. Among those who contributed to the programme were Mrs. M. Morrison,_ Miss M. Thomson, Chaplain Fraser, and Mr. J. P. Holland. Mangaweka Plunket Society. Visitors from Taihape (the mother branch) were present at the twentyfifth annual meeting of the Mangaweka Plunket Society, and congratulatory messages were received from the Director of Plunket Nursing, Miss Fitzgibbon, and irom original workers in the district movement. The committee had set out to gain 100 members to celebrate the jubilee, and succeeded. Mrs. Guthrie and Mrs. Sweet, president and secretary, were given mementoes of the occasion. Personals. Mrs. V. B. Willis is the guest of Mrs. A. Elliot in Wellington. Mrs. S. Riddler is a Wellington visito to Wanganui, the guest of Mrs. Douglas Young, St. John's Hill. Mrs. F. Warnock and Miss Rose Everson spent the holiday weekend in Wellington. Mrs. Hunter, of Auckland, and Mrs. A. Brewer, of Wellington, are visiting Mrs. W. R Brewer at "Waihau," Waverley. Mrs. J. Lissette, Hastings, was a weekend visitor. Mrs. Douglas Dyer, Gisborne, is visiting Wanganui. Miss B. Ogden, Wellington, senior Plunket nurse, was the speaker at the annual meeting of the Wanganui branch of the Plunket Society today. Mrs. T. Brett and Mrs. Minhinnick, of Auckland, are the guests of Mrs. F. B. Wylds. Miss Jean Carey, Wellington, spent the holiday weekend at Patea. Mr. and Mrs. W. Thartres were Wellington visitors for the Meuli—Higginbottom wedding. Mrsw J. Searle, who has recently returned from England, visited Wanganui at the weekend, and returned to Wellington on Monday. Misses M. E. and L. Parkes left Wanganui yesterday to take up residence at Paraparaumu beach. Mrs. Heathcote D'Arcy has returned from a visit to Auckland.
