FREEDOM TO TESTIFY

Llewellin, Civil Lord of the Admiralty, stated in a number of written Parliamentary answers yes» terday that when the Naval Survey vessel Endeavour returned to Auckland the Commodore commanding the New Zealand Station intended to order ■ a full confidential inquiry into desertions arid punishment in the ship. The investigation would be thorough, and no rating who made* representa^ tions in the proper Service manner would be penalised. In the last two years it had been . necessary to stop the allotments of eight ratings, one stoker petty officer, two stokers first class, and five able seamen, owing to desertion. Early last year, in view of the comparatively large number, .of punish* ments in the Endeavour steps were taken by the Admiralty to improve the discipline, including changes ia.-. certain personnel and the grant df ;\ .additional, lea^e* —• -',
