IMPORT CONTROL

PETITION PRESENTED

ORDER TO MINISTERS

LORD GALWAY ASKED

TO ACT

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day,

A petition bearing the signatures of the president, members of the executive, and secretary of the Bureau of Importers was presented to the Gover-nor-General, Lord Galway, at Government House on Friday, and receipt of it has been acknowledged by his Excellency. It is as follows:—

Your Excellency.

We, your petitioners, respectfully request that the import control regulations be no longer enforced and that their operations be immediately suspended by reason of their illegality.

A petition to your Excellency was some time ago presented making a similar request, and, in reply, we were informed that you had been .advised by the Hon. Attorney7General that the regulations were valid. It is now common knowledge that his Honour Mr. Justice Callan has -held :them ultra vires and void. In spite, of this decision they are still in force. It is felt such continued enforcement means that the Crown, through its. representative, is being made party to an illegal act.

To you, Sir, as his Majesty's re- ■■' presentative, we 'respectfully peti- . > tion and pray you to instruct yourMinisters to order immediately that the foregoing regulations be no longer enforced.

The Bureau has been advised. that the hearing of the appeal in the case of Jackson and Co. versus the Collector of Customs will probably be commenced in the Court of Appeal at Wellington next week.
