BOTANIST ABROAD
WIDE RANGE COVERED

AUCKLAND, June 5,
Botanical investigations in four countries-were undertaken by the Rev. Dr. J. E. Holloway, head of the botanydepartment of the University of Otago, who returned by the Awatea last week after six months spent abroad. Dr. Holloway, .accompanied', by' Mrs; Holloway, visited famous universities in the United States,' Great . Britain, South. Africa, and Australia. - . Leaving New Zealand in November, Dr. Holloway travelled to the United States, consultingi a,number-of prominent botanists in many ..States and visiting the California, Stanford, Chicago, Yale, and Harvard Universities and Smith College. He also1 attended a meeting in Virginia of the American Association for the Advancement ,of Science.
In\. Great Britain Dr. Holloway visited the Universities' of. Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester, and Glasgow, and various colleges of the University of London, also discussing botanical problems with well-known British authorities. In March he arrived in South Africa, where, in addition to calling at several .distinguished universities, he visited ,the,world-famous Botanic Garden at Kirstenbosch and the Karroo Garden, where a number of African desert plants are grown. Proceeding to' Australia, Dr.: Holloway landed at.Perth, .travelling by the trans-continental * railway to Adelaide, Melbourne,, and. Sydney,, and spending some time in the botanical departments of the universities in each of those cities. After spending several days in Auckland, he left for. the south during the weekend. ■ ' . .
