ASSOCIATION MATCH

tWELLINGTON V. CANTERBURY

vThe first interprovincial Association match of the Wellington season will be played at the Basin Reserve on Monday afternoon, the King's Birthday holiday, between Canterbury and Wellington, and although no trophy will be at stake the game will be of great interest to followers of the code, as it will give an indication of Wellington's strength and its chances of regaining the F.4. Trophy, for which a game is to!6e played against either Otago or Auckland in the near future. Wellington's friendly fixture with Canterbury has been a regular King's Birthday event during the last few years, and seems likely to continue as such, especially in the event of a .trophy being provided for competition i ■between the two, provinces. Wellington and Auckland have the Frank Campbell Rose Bowl for competition between them, and Canterbury and Otago have the'J. E. Jones Trophy. It remains only for someone to present a Canterbury-Wellington trophy! to link the four provinces. •' Although : Canterbury are playing Otago on the King's Birthday_ the province has enough Soccer strength to be able to' field another first-class representative side to try conclusions with Wellington. Most Canterbury teams.that have visited Wellington in the past have excelled ir the snappy , short-passing ? forward game, and Mon-| day's visitors are expected to prove no exception. Wellington's exhibition will show the value of the work of the Wellington Football Association's official coach, Mr. J. R. Sheffield. He has not had the time to do as much training and coaching of the' representative eleven as some people would have liked, but his assistance to the team must have some effect, and, in addition there .is the good resulting from his coaching of the various senior club teams. The teams will be as follows:— , Wellington. Turkington (Marist) K. Yeoman (Seatoun), S. Haines V.' .(Petone). R. Reid (Petone), Ri Boyes (Seatoun), J. Duffy (Marist) R. Quirke (Marist), W. Woods (Petone) N. lEdmunds (Seatoun), R. Ward (Waterside), D. Craig (Petone). Canterbury. Laing Porter Mitchell Anderson Sutherland Renwick . Wilson : Smith Craggs Wilkins Burnand A. Longbottom ■ (Waterside) is Wellington's emergency, and Weir is Canterbury's. Mr. G. Jackson will be the referee and the linesmen will be Messrs. E. J. McQueen and J. Sanderson.
