Won by three lengths, with three-quarters of a length between second and third. Winner bred by the late Mr. P. FitzGerald and trained by J.: Lawson at Manton, Wilts.
A son of Solario, for whom Sir John Rutherford refused £80,000 during his lifetime, but who was later sold to a British syndicate .of stud masters for 47,000 guineas, Maranta, who carries the colours of the famous South African sportsman Sir Abe Bailey, did not display outstanding form in his early career, failing at two and three years. However, last season he won the rich Hardwieke Stakes, 1\ miles, at Ascot. Flyon, the runner-up, did particularly well as a three-year-old last season, winning the Tudor Stakes at Sandown Park, the Payne Stakes at Newmarket, the Gatwick St. Leger Trial. Stakes, the Newmarket St. Leger, and the Liverpool St. Leger. Dragonnade, the third place getter, dead-heated with Buckleigh in the Manchester Cup last year.—''Binocular."
