CHESS
HUTT VALLEY CLUB
The tenth annual general meeting of the Hutt Valley Chess Club was held recently, when the president, Mr. J. W. Wood, occupied the chair. The report of the retiring hon. secretary, Mr. W. Toomath, showed 'that the past year had been a very active one. members having participated in several of the competitions staged by the Wellington Chess League. The annual tourney for the club championship was won by Dr. R. A. Bakewell, whose father was one of the Dominion's leading players in the early nineties. The lightning tourney and the annual handicap tourney were both won by Mr. J. W. Wood, who thus holds, for the ensuing 12 months, the handsome silver cup that he donated some years ago. The balance-sheet shows that the club's finances are in a sound condition. The report and balance-sheet were adopted unanimously. Mr. J. W. Wood was ■reelected president. The new hon. secretary, Mr. T. R. Clemas, is a son of Mr. A. Clemas. who has been hon. secretary of the Masterton Chess Club for more than two decades. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring hon. secretary. Mr. W. Toomath. who was not available for re-election as he has to devote much time to pre; parations for the Early Settlers' Centenary Pageant. The remaining officers were re-eieeted. It was decided to hold two Aourneys (championship and handicap), to enter a team for the league's first grade competition, and to nominate Dr. R. A. Bakewell for the annual champion .of champions contest. CHESS KEY. There has been received from the editor..of "Chess," Sutton Coldfield, England, a copy of "Chess Key," being ay key.-to chess openings compiled by Dr. Max Euwe (ex-champion of the world) and Reuben Fine (the well- ; known American grand master). The leading lines of play in the openings that are" commonly used nowadays arp presented in a novel but attractive form. This small and inexpensive ad dition. to an ever-increasing amouni of chess literature should be of de citied assistance to the student who wishes to improve his play. Subscribers can remit to the editor of "Chess" by using the postage stamps of any country.
