NEW PLATES
CHANGE-OVER TODAY
REGISTRATION RUSH
Though the new licensing year does not open until tomorrow, authority for the gold and black plates to be fixed to motor vehicles today has been announced by--the.- Minister of- Transport (the Hon. R. Semple). •. .-■•■■ -.:. Mr. Semple • said - -that ,- representations had been made to him about the inconvenience caused to motorists by the requirement that thenew nuntfoerplates, though now purchasable,, were not to be fitted until June 1 when the new lience year commences. "I. realise," he added, "that though there is little work entailed to fit thenew plates, it .may be more convenient to do so on .the - day before they are required. Arrangements have., therefore, been made so that, no steps .will, be taken to prohibit the use of the new plates on Wednesday, May 31, provided that the old plates for .that day are carried in the vehicle for. the purposes of check. "I wish to stress that the opposite does not hold: and every motor vehicle in use on June 1 must have the new plates properly attached to it. This is' important from the point of view of third-party insurance, and therefore ! will be rigidly enforced."
Yesterday was a very rushed day at the registration "bureau at the Concert Chember, 1450' sets of plates being issued by the Post Office officials and 2000 drivers' licences renewed by the City Traffic Offtce. Today is even busier. The bureau will remain . open until 8 o'clock .tonight, and.the staff will continue at the Concert Chamber tomorrow until 4 p.m., after which plates will be issued at-the'Post Office and drivers' licences at the Traffic Office.
