WOMEN'S PROTEST
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —May I be permitted to say a few words in support of the Ghristchurch women? Miss Amy Kane described their actions as silly. I know nothing of her personal circumstances, but I wonder if she would still apply that word "silly"' if she.'was struggling to feed six mouths, clothe six people, buy boots, pay, 35s a week rent, buy coal, pay for gas and electrict light, pay two 5s lots of social security payments during the month of May, a quarterly union fee, a contribution to a lodge, which one dare not allow, to slide in spite of the fact that the Social Security Act is law — all on £"4 minus 4s tax? No. I think after about one week of that she would alter . the word ; from "silly" to "pathetic." It's easy to say pay it, but if you haven't got it; you can't, and the Christchurch women are not fighting for themselves but the large body of women in New Zealand who wake every morning -to the same old question: "How am I going to make the money spin out to the end of the week?" —I am, etc.,
WINTER AHEAD.
