TIMBER-FELLING
CONCERN IN NORTH
PRESERVING THE KAURI
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
WHANGAREI, This Day,
The Forestry Department's announced intention to adopt a planned marketing scheme whereby it will take a million and a half broad feet of timber from State forests during 1939-40, and thereafter make an intensive survey of the whole of the kauri forests and overcut areas, has aroused keen opposition in Northland, where a strong movement is being made to secure the preservation of the remaining kauri trees.
A largely-attended conference of local body members and representatives of the people, held in the Omahuta Forest on Saturday, passed resolutions requesting the Government to cease cutting operations until the people of Northland had been given ample opportunity of discussing the matter of the kauri forests with the Minister, with a view to urging the Government to establish a large fund for the purchase of desirable tracts of privately-owned bush areas in Northland and to consider remitting rates to owners of bush-covered land who are prepared to reserve it for scenic purposes. It was also decided to urge the Government to obtain sound advice on the reafforestation of hillsides subject to slips.
