PONEKE CLUB EVENT
A pleasant surprise was in store for members of the Poneke Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday afternoon, when just prior to the start of the restricted gear time trial a cup was presented by Mr. K. Hayes to be awarded to the winner of the sealed handicap.
With all =the competitors allowed a gear of no higher than "70," to maintain a speed of 20 miles an hour was necessary for a rider to keep his pedals turning at the rate of 98 revolutions, a minute, compared with the usual rate of about 76 revolutions a minute with a normal racing gear. Therefore, Roy Dutton, who returned the fastest time for the 20 miles of 55min 38 2-ssec, had to "rev." at approximately 104 turns per minute. H. Sparkes, one of the younger riders, revealed good form by making third fastest time, and with an allowance of 3 minutes, won the cup for the handicap section. Second place and second fastest time were won by W. Goey (2%mln), who was 13 seconds quicker than Sparkes. Results: — R. Dutton (scr), 55min 38 2-ssec, fastest and third place. W. Goey (2y a mtn.), 57mln lOsec, second fastest and second place. H Sparkes (3min.), 57mln 23 3-ssec, third fastest and first place. Next Saturday a 2-man time trial will be held over a distance of 25 miles. This will be for seniors and juniors combined. PORT NICHOLSON CLUB. In the absence of Mr. A. R. Thomas, patron of the club, the president, Mr. W. Sowerby, declared the Port Nicholson Cycling Culb's season open at Island Bay. A 22 miles' handicap was held and was won by P. McMaster There was a close finish between J. Wilson and G. Amey for fastest time honours, Wilson beating Amey by a foot. Although there was a gusty wind and a considerable amount of traffic, Wilson's time of 62min 19sec was faster by 54sec than O. Disley's time for the same race last year. Results!— — P. McMaster (6min.), 64.26, 1; T. Yule (smin.), 63.26 1-5, 2; J. Hammond <7min.), 65 26 2-5, 3;- R. Hoseler (7min), 65.31, 4. Fastest times: J. Wilson (scr.), 62.19; G. Amey (scr.), 62.19 1-5; N. Gestro (4min.), 62.52. PETONE CLUB. The Petone Amateur Athletic and CyclingClub held a combined senior and junior tenmile road race. Results:—D. Austin (4min.), 1; H. Laurie (2M>min.). 2: D. Biggs (4min.), ' Fastest time was made by H. Laurie, a junior rider (2Vimin.), 24min 31sec. A. Pennington amin.). 24min 35 2-ssec, was next fastest, and C. Biggs (lmin.). 24min 35 3-ssec, third fastest. CASH CLUB. The Wellington Cash Cycling Club held a low-gear trial, from Petone to Silverstream and back A sealed handicap was held in conjunction with the time event. W Sinclair secured first place and fastest! time- V. Wakem secured second place, ana H. Houston third place and second fastest ""Next Saturday the club will hold a 25-mile j handicap race. j
