LARGE SUM RAISED
BALL CONCLUDES CARNIVAL
Over 400 people attended the Coronation Ball in Symonds Hall, Joh'nsonville, to witness the crowning of the District Queen (Miss Jean Cornwell) the successful candidate in the recent queen carnival held by the Newlands and Paparangi Recreation Club. The sum of £550 was raised as a result of the carnival and is to be used towards the building of a hall in the Newlands district.
In opening the proceedings the president (Mr. M. Cornwell) thanked Mr. Titshall and his committee who sponsored the Independent Queen (Miss Mavis Wood), and the various organisations who represented the District Queen (Miss Jean Cornwell) for their tireless work throughout the campaign. The thanks of the club was also expressed to Johnsonville residents for the wholehearted support they had given.
The ceremony of crowning the queen was performed by Mr. H. Combs, M.P., who spoke in appreciative terms of the very fine effort made by the Recreation Club for such a good cause.
A beautiful bouquet was presented to Mrs. Combs by little Enis Hunt.
The procession of the queens and attendants and the crowning ceremony were very impressive and well staged. Those taking part were:— Heralds, Mrs. Earl, Miss M. Fraser, Chamberlain, Mr. J. McArthur; queen, Miss J. Cornwell; train bearers, Joycelyn Ring, Nancy Fraser; ladies in waiting, Miss L. Kettlewell, Mrs. J. Ring, Miss D. Watkins; mistress of robes, Mrs. M. Cornwell;'crown bearer, Colin Kettlewell; sword bearer, Margaret Keegan; standard bearer, Miss M. Watjkins; attendants, Mrs. Petrie, Miss N. Cameron; Princess Mavis, Miss M. I Wood; train bearers, Lois Earl, Jack i Stanley; ladies in waiting, Miss A. Earl, Mrs. R. Mason, Mrs. I. Hunt; standard bearer, Miss M. Pearson; attendants, Mrs. L. Tunley, Miss M. Balmthorpe; lord high chancellor, Mr. P. Titshall.
During the ceremony honours titles were conferred on the following:— Mrs. F. Kettlewell, Mrs. H. Wood, Mrs. Rhear, Mrs. L. Hodgson, Mrs. P. Titshall, Mrs. G. Broad, Miss G. Jackson, and Messrs. R. Earl, N. Watson, M. Cornwell, H. Bartlett, P. Sebire, L. Tunley.
At the close of the evening Mr. Combs (on behalf of the club) presented Miss J. Cornwell and Miss M. Wood with a gift as a memento of the occasion.
