WELLINGTON & UNIVERSITY
Faultless goal-kicking by Taylor and more constructive play on the part of the Wellington backs were factors that largely attributed to Wellington's comfortable .win over University in the match played on the Petone Oval. The exhibition was, for the most part, uninspiring, although there were some bright interludes in which Veitch (Wellington) and Jtae (University) played no small part.
When Wellington secured three points in as many minutes after the commencement. University's prospects did not look too hopeful, and the fact that they held Wellington to a ninepoint lead at the interval reflected favourably on the defence which they offered. Although the University forwards more than held their own—in fact, their combined play was at times decidedly superior—and from the set scrummages Burke secured for his backs a fair share of the ball, they were seldom, able to turn their opportunities to advantage owing to the spoiling tactics of the Wellington inside backs. With the assistance of the wind after the change-over University resumed proceedings in a promising manner, but, as play progressed, Wellington sharpened their attack and on several occasions their backs took command and came close to scoring. During this spell Veitch scored a try for Wellington which Taylor converted, and in the last few minutes University staged a strong attack which resulted in McVeagh scoring a fine try. It was converted by Kissel, who, in the first spell, also kicked * a'penalty goal. ' Wellington's remaining points came from three penalty goals kicked by Taylor and a try by Sherratt. The game ended in a win for Wellington by 17 points to S. a n Cl—„„ «... *«.. .J«««a
