MANY PENALTIES
The standard of play in the Athletic-Oriental match at Anderson Park failed to reach the expectations of quite a large gallery. Indeed, the- game as a spectacle was completely spoilt by the unusually large number of infringements and their consequent penalties. A considerable amount of the time was taken up with penalty kicks alone, and from at least sixteen of the penalties, place-kicks at goal were taken.
However, a redeeming feature of these attempts was the fair proportion of success gained. Of the thirty points scored, twentyfour came from the boot, Auld (Athletic) and Rowlands (Oriental) each kicking four goals. The other points were from tries by Evenson for Athletic and Rowland for Oriental, the latter gaining the distinction of scoring all of his team's points.
Taken all round Athletic gave the sounder display send attempted more constructive football although Oriental often kept them busy on defence with loose forward rushes. The result was a draw —15-all. The referee was Mr. B. P. Wilson.
