TIMBER PROFITS
GOVERNMENT CONTROL
The directors of the National Timber Company, Limited, Auckland, have recommended a dividend of 34 per cent, for the year ended March 31. Payment will be made about June 15. The distribution compares with 2i per cent, in the previous year and 5 per cent, in 1937. A net profit of £4013 is shown in the accounts of the company for the year ended March 31. This compares with £2623 in 1938 and £3171 in 1937. The profit is struck after providing £1995 for depreciation, as against £1707 in the previous year. In their report, the directors state that the volume of sales for the year constituted a record, but n-et earnings were disappointing. This was due particularly to increases in the costs of production and taxation. Since selling prices are controlled by the Government, extra costs could not be handed on.
