CHAIRMAN RETIRES

SERVICE IN JOHNSONVILLE

A presentation of a desk fountain pen and holder was made to Mr. G. A. Lawrence, late chairman of the Johnsonville Town Board, at a meeting of the board last night. Mr. Lawrence resigned his position on February 20 after serving on the board for sixteen years, the last four of which he was chairman.

Mr. H. D. Morgan, present chairman, in making the presentation, said that too often the people of a district allowed msn who took up duties voluntarily and who did their best to serve the community, to go away without any word" of thanks for the work done. He thought that a man who worked on any local body or social organisation should receive some measure of praise and appreciation, and the board wished to show its appreciation of Mr. Lawrence's work by its gift. He hoped that Mr. Lawrence had not regretted his stay on the board: The members would try to emulate the good work he had done for the district.

In thanking members .-for their gift, Mr. Lawrence said thaf the occasion was one of the great compensations that one could get for service in the interest of the community. In a small body like the board there were no mayoral robes and no honoraria, but there was more work"; for members of such a body than to many of the larger ones. One of the best things about a public position was. the number of friends one made, and5 during the time he had held his position he had derived great pleaisure from the friends he had' made in connection with his work. A framed photograph., 'of Mr. Laurence, with his years of, service on the board inscribed on, it, is to be hung in the board roomsJ ; ;
