YOUTH WORK

ANGLICAN CHURCH

ENGLISH VISITOR COMING

CAMPAIGN OPENING IN . NORTHLAND

An important step forward in work amongst young people in the Anglican diocese of Wellington is to be inaugurated shortly by the visit of Miss C. Hawtrey, of England, and Northland, of which the Rev. J. E. AshleyJones is vicar, has been chosen as the district in which she shall inaugurate her campaign. Endowed with an interesting personality, Miss Hawtrey, who is no j stranger to New Zealand, has had long experience of work among young people in England and her labours have been attended with much success. After retiring from ictive duty in England she went to Canada, where she was engaged with Church vans which go into remote parts of the country preparing young people for Confirmation and generally helping to develop the spiritual > life of the community in places where it is not possible for the clergy to pay frequent visits. The strenuous nature of the work, combined with the rigours of the Canadian winter, at length, com* ipelled Miss Hawtrey to relinquish her activities in Canada and she returned to England. Some time later Miss Hawtrey came out to New Zealand, and.during the absence on leave of Deaconess Spen-cer-Smith, she took charge of St. Faith's House of Sacred Learning, Christchurch. On Deaconess SpencerSmith's return to New Zealand, Miss Hawtrey went back to England. The importance of stimulating Christian ideals amongst young people is fully recognised by Church workers in the Wellington diocese, and recently the Wellington Diocesan Youth Council decided to invite Miss Hawtrey to come out to New Zealand to assist in the task of advancing the youth work of the Church. This she consented to do, and she will make a commencement in St. Anne's parish. Northland, on Monday, May 22. There will be short evensong at 7 p.m. and an address by the vicar, and at 7.30 Miss Hawtrey will speak on "God." Discussion will follow. The following evening, at 7.30, she will speak on "Jesus Christ," after which there will again be a discussion. Youth work will be the subject of two other addresses by Miss Hawtrey, the first at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday* May 24, to members of the Church of England Men's Society, and other men, especially fathers, and the second on Thursday, May 25, at -2.45 p.m.,. to members of the St. Anne's Ladies' Guild end other ladies, especially mothers, On the Thursday evening, at 7.30, Miss Hawtrey will give an address on "Prayer and the Church," and this will be followed by a discussion. On Friday, May 26, Miss Hawtrey will be available during the day and evening for discussion of individual problems, and on Saturday there will be the | usual Bible class social in the parish hall. Special services will be held in St. AnneVChurch on May 28 (Whit Sunday). At 8 a.m. there will be i Holy Communion, at 9.30 a.m. family service, and at 7 p.m. evensong, which will conclude with devotions for the week's work. All of Miss Hawtrey's addresses will be given in the parish hall.
