GALSWORTHY'S "STRIFE"
Listeners to 4YA Dunedin on Sunday night next will hear a radio version of John Galsworthy's sociological drama, "Strife." Like all of Galsworthy's earlier plays, such as "The Silver Box" and "Justice," "Strife" is a powerful drama with a thesis, a thesis that attempts to show the futility of industrial strikes. Whije it is true that many sociological dramas are often no more than expressions of platitudes, it must be remembered by listeners to this production of "Strife" that the theme was certainly not a platitude in the year 1909. However, the drama of Galsworthy's play transcends the author's thesis, for it is in the author's impartial exposition of his character's reactions under the forces of a social system that the excellence of this play really lies. "Strife" is a powerful piece of dramatic writing which does without the slight touches of melodrama that are to be found in Galsworthy's later plays. The play moves rapidly from strength to strength so that listeners should find this an entertaining drama of a particularly high quality. The play, is produced by the National Broadcasting Service.
William the Conqueror is undoubtedly one of the most colourful figures in English history, ana listeners will hear something of this great man's life in the episode of the historical, panoramic serial, "Man Through the Ages," to be broadcast from 4YA Dunedin tonight at 8.35.
