The conference rejected a remit urging that a committee be set up io investigate the possibility of amalgamating with the New Zealand Educational Institute. ' ••-
~A resolution was passed urging the Minister of Education to appoint another Assistant Director of Education so that one might have charge -: of primary education and one charge of, and co-ordinate the work of, , -all branches of intermediate and postprimary education. .
• The Minister was also urged to-put into force the statutory school-leaving age of 15 years as soon as practicable. The association decided to continue to press for the adoption by the Government of the policy approved at" the 1938 conference, and in particular-for the introduction of a just, method of appointment and promotion. The-asso-ciation emphatically reaffirmed its lack of confidence in the present method of making appointments, and pressed ior the setting up of a national appointment board. -'"
The Minister's attention was drawn to the fact that reiterated requests for library grants on a capitation basis had not been granted. A Wairarapa remit asking the Minister to give favourable consideration-to the Department buying in bulk text book* and materials in common use was rejected. '..-■.-
