15TH BATTERY
APPEAL TO ATHLETES
FILLING OF VACANCIES
There are at present,, according to ! Captain B. Barrington, Area Recruit-! ing Officer, about 150 vacancies in the 15th Heavy Battery, Fort Dorset. Last night, at a meeting of delegates to the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre, Captain Barrington appealed to the centre to take up the definite task of providing all the recruits necessary to fill the vacancies. His appeal met with an enthusiastic response, and a committee was appointed ~to organise a recruiting effort among the athletes. Addressing the meeting, Captain Barrington said that if the athletic and harrier clubs could find the men required for the 15th Battery, they would be doing a really valuable work. A delegate, Mr. A. B. Campbell, who is a lieutenant in the 15th Battery, referred to the varied training that was given in the battery, and said that on parade nights there was a free tram service from the railway station. ..' In answer to Mr. J. Gilmore, who referred to the difficulty of fitting in athletic training with hiiiita|y training,- Captain Barrington said; that Jthe Defence Department, when deciding oh parade hiights, had tried to meet the needs of-the majority. There were no parkdes in .December and January. Saturday : and Sunday morning parades had been considered, but evenings were preferred. The president, Mr. A..-C. Kitto, said that acceptance of the proposal meant something more than merely sending put notices; that would get them nowhere.' After all, very little sacrifice was for. On tiie motion of Mr. A. Hose, a committee was appointed to organise a recruiting appeal among athletes in Wellington, the following being the members of the committee: —Messrs. T. W. Leslie and A. D. Rowse, conveners, D. Johnston, J. Gilmore, A. Hose, F. Taylor, A. B. Campbell, P. Holmes, and Armstrong. "",'.'
Mr. Chappell said the harriers had promised their support and would discuss ari appeal at a meeting next week.
