DEFENCE OF EGYPT
BRITISH ASSURANCES
FULFILMENT OF TREATY
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, May 1
The Prime Minister was asked in the House of Commons what was the nature of the assurances relating to the defence of Egypt recently given by Britain. He replied that he presumed the question referred to a statement made by the Egyptian Prime Minister on April 24.
That statement had been noted with much appreciation by Britain, which on many occasions had assured Egypt that she might entirely depend on the full and loyal co-operation of Britain in carrying out the provisions of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty.
The Egyptian Premier, Mahmud Pasha, announced on April 24 in Parliament that Britain had given an assurance that in the event of an emergency the Egyptian land, sea, and air forces would receive sufficient help to enable them to defend their country adequately. These assurances were already being implemented. He added that while Egypt hoped for peace, she was taking all precautions and would not be taken unawares.
