ST. GEORGE V. CENTRAL

Central met St. George at Newtown Park in the second championship game in the first round, and some interesting play was seen.

Central, with the wind in their favour, attacked at the outset, but the St, George defence . was equal to he strain and some hard, interesting play was seen. D. Hicks, the St. George right-wingef, a newcomer to the' game, showed excellent speed, and T. Cook, at five-eighths, was also showing fine form. The inclusion of these two players appeared to strengthen considerably the St. George combination, and the standard of play was an improvement on that shown the previous Saturday. Central did most of the attacking towards the end of the first spell, and through the efforts of Coutts and Dlxon had the lead by 9 points to 6.

The second spell was full of incident, and Central held the advantage, showing sound combination of backs and forwards.

The final score. was Central 12, St. George 9,

MIRAMAR V, NEWTOWN

Miramar and Newtown met at Miramar under good conditions for play.

Miramar kickea off against the sun with the wind behind them. Gollop tried hard for Miramar m the opening stages. Holmes, playing a great game, gave Chambers a chance for Newtown, but the ball waf intercepteQ by R, Minnoch. Newtown forwards again charged, but were stopped by Askew Chambers again sent his men away, and McLennan scored brilliantly. Chambers, failed with.the kick, Newtown 3-0,

Miramar were now getting the ball from the scrum and scored a penalty off Barrett's foot Newtown 3. Miramar 2

From the kick-all the ball travelled through the backs to the winger Spiers, who gave an overhear' pass to Askew, who scored. Miramar sent Garland over and led 8-3 at half-time.

From the kick-off the Miramar backs sent Garland over, followed' by more back play, when Dalley scored and Askew converted Miramar 16. Newtown 3

From a forward rush R. Minnoch scored and Askew again added the major points. Miramar 21, Newtown 3.

Drew was now playing wejl tor Newtown, Trillo scored for Miramar from his own twenty-five, and Askew goaled. The game ended Miramar 26, Newtown 3.

PETONE V. RANDWICK

From the commencement of the game between Petone and Randwick, the former immediately took play deep into Randwick's twenty-five, but their backs were fumbling badly and Randwick were quick to take advantage of any mistakes. Berry led the Randwick forwards in fine style, while Thomas (an Australian) was a tower of strength in the back line. It was mainly through this player's scoring three tries that enabled Ran,dwick* to lead at half-time by 18 points to 12. In the second spell the game was as much Petone's as it was Randwick's in the first half. Petone opened up the game and set a fast pace. Williams gave his backs plenty of the ball, and Selwood and Kreyl led the pack in some useful rushes. In the back line Patrick and Evans were outstanding. With only five minutes to go, and the scores even . (21 points all) excitement was intense, both teams striving hard for supremacy. For off-side play Petone were penalised right in front of the posts, and Anderson kicked/ a goal. With minutes to go Petone staged a desperate effort and the ball travelled, out 'o Evans, who scored in the corner. It was his third try and gave his side victory by one point.

For Petone the following scored tries: Williams, Kreyl, Patrick, and Evans (3) Coman converted one and kicked a penalty goal. Patrick kicked a field goal. Randwick's points came from tries by Thomas (3), Kearns, and Pirritt, Anderson and JVlcKelvy converting one each Anderson also kicked two penalty goals.

The final score was Petone 24, Randwick 23.
