START MADE ON SATURDAY
WELLINGTON BEAT PONEEE AT
ATHLETIC PARK
Championship matches under the control of the Wellington Rugby Union, from senior down to and inclusive of third grade, commenced on Saturday in fine weather for Rugby. "Most grounds had lost their early season hardness, but were springy, allowing for fairly general fast play. Unusual keenness was the keynote of play in the senior grade-—championship honours and representative laurels are to be won —and some interesting games were witnessed. Wellington and Poneke were given pride of place at Athletic Park, some 4000 spectators being present. Better combination and penetration by the former's rearguard, assisted by some useful kicking by J. M. Taylor, All Black full-back, formerly of Otago, allowed them to run out comfortdble winners. Athletic and Marist Bros. Old Boys had narrow wins over Johnsonville and Wellington College Old Boys respectively. Petone had little trouble beating Oriental, and University trounced Eastbourne. St. Patrick's College Old Boys were only three points behind Hutt when time was called. There was some interesting play in the newly^constituted senior A second division.
