POPPY DAY
RECORD SALES
WILL EXCEED £1600
Although several returns, including one substantial one, are still to be received by the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association from poppy sales on Friday, the. amounts in hand are not far short of the total collected last year. Returns which have been received from business firms, but which are not included in the totals given below, are in excess of those received a year ago, so it is probable that these returns when completed will bring the total to well over £1600. The weather yesterday was not ideal for street sales, but poppy sellers disposed of more during the day than ever before, and purchasers were liberal, with the result that there were increased takings at nearly all of the stands.- Two years ago the total amount collected was £1474, and this increased to £1579 last year. If the increased takings are maintained by the returns to come in the present total of £1532 for this year should be increased by approximately £200. The young women from the Public Service who collected at the intersection of Cuba and Manners Streets under the supervision of Miss B. Patton again topped the list, their total being £284, an increase of £48 over last year. A statement made in Dunedin that the total contribution of the public, on Poppy Day for the relief of distressed , returned soldiers is subject to the Social Security tax of a. shilling in the pound is contradicted by officers of the Wellington R.S.A. The secretary, Mr. : J. Spence, after confirming the Wellington Association's opinion by consultation with the secretary of the New Zealand R.S.A., Mr. S. J. Harrison, said that the public's contributions were not taxed, but that if'some of the money were paid out in wages, which was the case with only a very small sum in Wellington, the recipient had to pay tax on his wages. Poppy day funds were* exemptei-rom%'taxation,--and the. : law with regard to them had not been altered with the enactment of the Social Security Act.
AUCKLAND COLLECTION
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, April 21
With collections from five outlying districts still to come, a total of £1970 was received in Auckland as the result of the Poppy Day appeal. It is expected that the full subscriptions will not fall far short of last year's record yield of £2223. Though it is considered that had rain not interfered the response might have been in excess of last year's total, in the circumstances, the Auckland R.S.A. is more than satisfied with the result.
