RED CROSS SOCIETY
WELLINGTON ACTIVITIES
The activities of a busy month were reviewed at a recent meeting of the Wellington Red Cross Society. Mrs. W. Dennistoun-Wood presided.
It was decided to contribute £5 to tb.3 League of Red Cross Societies' quotas and £2 2s to the Florence Nightingale Fund.
A report was submitted on the recent successful garden fete, and cordial thanks were expressed to all helpers.
Superintendent C. A. Woolley, of the Wellington Fire Brigade, wrote acknowledging the services of the V.A.D.s at recent fires.
Reports were received from the Red Cross nurses stating that the number attending classes had increased and satisfactory progress was being made.
A report showed that the number of Junior Red Cross Circles had increased and the usual programme of work was being carried out.
Regular visits to patients in hospitals had been paid by the ladies' auxiliary. • At the Red Cross cafeteria at the Wellington Hospital 1350 persons had been served during the month and £6 Is 3d had been received in donations for this work.
j The president of the Ladies' Social Club reported that the fifth annual meeting had been held and a useful plan of campaign to strengthen the society's work had been embarked upon. The Younger Set of the Victoria League, by arrangement with their president, Miss. P. Gledhill, have become members of the society and are already, training for home nursing and first aid by which they will ultimately become ■ a section of the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment. SERVICES FOR THE BLIND. The report on behalf of the civilian blind of Wellington showed that radio sets and licences had been attended to. [Arrangements had been made for the supply of Braille and typewriter machines and many other services given for the blind.
Reports from the Voluntary Aid Detachments, both men's and women's, stated that regular practices had been carried out and a high standard of efficiency maintained. As in the past, members resolved to co-operate fully with the R.S.A. Poppy Day appeal and the request of the RSA that a number of V.A.D.s in uniform be available for the Anzac night concert was acceded to. This will be in charge of Head Section Leader Miss Dorothy Cooper. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. E Lamberg in her recent bereavement. She was warmly thanked for the gift of a dressed doll and it was left to the secretary to make arrangements for authority to conduct a raffle.
