EIRE PROTESTS
COMMENT BY JUDGE
SENTENCE ON I.R.A. MEMBER
(Independent Cable Service.)
(Received April 18, 10 a.m.)
LONDON, April 17.
Eire has protested to Britain in connection with the sentencing on April 3 of Gerald Francis Wharton, a participant in the Irish Republican Army terrorist plot, when Mr. Justice Humphreys remarked: "You were a member of that gang which committed the murders of British officers up to 1922."
According to a London cablegram published on April 4, the Judge also said that Wharton was the worst and most dangerous of the accused. He fought against two Irish Governments and .tried in vain to tunnel his way from prison. He was released in 1924 and received a pension from the Irish Government.
