(Special to the "Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day,

A comprehensive report on the Palmerston North hospital, presented to yesterday's meeting of the Hospital Board by the medical superintendent (Mr. J. H. North), records a higher occupied bed rate than during any previous year, the figure being over 207. Accommodation remains a difficult problem until further ward accommodation is available. Patients admitted during the twelve months ended March 31, 1939, numbered 3235 and the daily average number of occupied beds was 207.j9. The individual average day's stay was 22.21. Mr. North also reported an increase in the number of Maori admissions, all requiring prolonged terms in hospital. The number of diphtheria cases was much higher thua in the previous few years. The disease had beer quiescent in the Palmerston North hospital district for a number of years and now showed an increase. There had been no localised epidemic, sporadic cases appearing in various parts. Of the 204 patients who had died in hospital, 46 occurred within 48 hours of admission. Of the total number of deaths, 40 were over the age of 70 years and 38 between 60 and 70 years. The general death rate was 5.94 but excluding the deaths within 48 hou- the rate was 4.6.
