HOCKEY UMPIRES

QUESTION OF FINANCE

There was an excellent attendance of members of the Wellington Hockey Umpires' Association' at the annual meeting held recently. Mr. W. G. Purves presided.

The new rules in the game of hockey up for discussion am 1 several prominent referees gave their views on interpretation. Mr. H. F. Bollard, secretary of the N.Z.H.U.A., read several articles which clarified the position from.the official English hockey journal. A summary of these articles will be issued shortly to guide both referees and players. Finance came in for a great deal of discussion. The secretary (Mr. R. H. Rolle) stated that the present income of the association was insufficient for its needs and that a demand should be made on the Wellington Hockey Association for a definite annual payment to increase the scope of the Umpires' Association. Mr. C. P. McKenzie objected to the use of the word "demand," saying that the Hockey Association could be relied on to be generous, and had only to be asked. . ..

Mr. W. Jenkinson thought that a portion of the levies paid to. the Hockey Association by players should come to the Umpires' Association. ' Mr. S. B. Browne put a motion forward to increase members' subscriptions but this received little support. A motion by Mr. Bollard to the effect that a generous donation be requested from the W.H.A. was adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. W. G. Purves; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. J. Dredge, Lloyd, and G. Whitham; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. H. Rolle; management- committee, Messrs. S. B. ■Browne, W. Dredge, and N. Giles; appointment board, Messrs. Browne, Dredge, and Rolle; examination comimittee, Messrs. H. F. Bollard, H. Hatch, and W. G. Purves; delegate to W.H.A., Mr. Purves; delegates to N.Z.H.U.A., Messrs. Dredge and Rolle. Six new referees were elected members. - ~ Mr. W. J. Dredge, by special motion of the meeting and with the approval of/the examiners, was elected an A grade referee.
