NORTH SHORE V. KARORI

The presence of Dacre, who captained the North Shore (Auckland) team against Karori, attracted quite a large gallery of spectators to Karori Park on Saturday. Unfortunately. Dacre was dismissed before lunefc after scoring 31 runs in the carefree style very much reminiscent of his heyday. The afternoon, however, provided some particularly- keen c^ket, with tt.eieal tit-bit being a dashing innings by Wells when Karori were desperately in need attack included the, Auckland representative Simpson,. whose deliveries quickly commanded respect, and had the several catches been accepted he might easily have stolen the bowling honours from the slow right-hander Cleal. . Clears figures were quite impressive until the arrival of Wells, and even then, despite the trouncing dealt out by the Karori batsman, he finished up with six wickets at a cost of ]ust over 10 runs apiece. McDevHt, who recently performed the hat-trick in Auckland, was used for only a brief spell. The former Auckland representative wicketkeeper Edmonds was not at his best behind the stumps, but this shortcoming was compensated for by an entertaining innings late in the afternoon. An unusual episode occurred while Cooper, of Karori, was batting. Cleal sent down a ball that beat the bat and rattled the stumps quite sufficiently to disturb the bails, but Edmonds in his attempt to take the ball neatly, knocked the bails back into place, and after a lengthy examination, did not appeal. . North Shore won the toss, but theninnings began disastrously, and a timely stand by McArthur and Dacre before lunch was mainly responsible for hoisting 100 up before the interval. Of the remaining batsmen Cleal revealed particularly good form, and his partnership with McDevitt provided some excellent batting. . j Karori failed to reach North Shore's j moderate total, and the batting col-j lapse that followed the useful start given by Coupland and Duffy was surprising under such ideal conditions. Cooper and Browne just failed to reach the twenties, and it was only Wells's innings that made the total look respectable. . i Towards the end of the day North Shore batted again, and the opening partnership was a considerable improvement on the first innings, but two wickets were lost before stumps were drawn. j There was little to choose between the Karori bowlers, with the .exception of McDonald, who was conspicuous early in' the day for a spell of hostile bowling.
